Tips and Tricks
1- Learn a few common Turkish words and important Turkish communication words:
Straight | Düz (douz) |
Here | Burası (burasou) |
Right | Sağ (Saou) |
left | Sol (Soh) |
Ok | İyi (eiye) |
Good | Tamam |
Good morning | Günaydın |
No | Hayir |
yes | Evet |
Thank you | Tesekkür Ederim |
Goodbye | Güle Güle |
2- Make sure you bring an international adapter; Turkey has different wall outlets.
3- Carry Cash: most places in Turkey don’t use credit card machines. Try to carry a smaller amount of money for smaller purchases. Turkey has banknotes for 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 Lira. So, carrying two 50 Liras instead of one 100 Lira might be better.
4- Verify if an e-visa is required prior to travelling to Turkey.
5- We recommend not buying any item from the first seller. Always get an idea of how much the merchandise is worth at different locations before deciding to purchase.
6- Always, always, always count out the change returned to you to ensure that you have been given the correct amount.
7- Why use taxis if the possibility of using other public transit is available? We recommend using trams in Istanbul. Check out the app (maps.me) on the front page to get more information about using trams.
8- Public restrooms in Istanbul charge a small fee to use them. Carrying some change (1TL) would do the trick.
